About Us

SALC empowers CSUMB students to learn by doing at the intersection of science, arts, and leadership. We prototype tech and media projects (e.g., drones/remote sensing, Arduino/VR, filmmaking), build civic-minded portfolios, and help members grow as collaborators and community leaders.

Remote Sensing

SALC has teamed up with international organization Science Voices and the student led A-CLUe to build a remote sensing internship program called Greenworks (GiG).

Students have a hands-on opportunity to take leadership positions in experimenting with ground station technology, rockets, drones, weather balloons, and eventually stratollites and CubeSats.

There will also be opportunities to experiment with circuits, Arduino sensors, and virtual reality to visualize instrumentation payloads.

Some of our students will be presenting a design abstract at Cal Poly's CubeSat Developer's Workshop (CDW) in April 2026.

Filmmaking

SALC has teamed up with the Artistic-Civic League United and TAC Professors from Hartnell College to produce a continuation of a short independent film that was presented last May at the New Works Film Festival.

Students this year will have the opportunity to use their imaginations to create, perform, and operate equipment & software to produce "Operation: Cold Nexus" -- an aspiring primetime series concerning global warming, geopolitical tension in the Arctic, and dramatic high-stakes action in California.

Preproduction begins for the next episode in March 2026, shoots in late April 2026, and exhibits at the New Works Film Festival 2026.

Game Tech & Exploration

Students will be exploring different platforms engines for building games such as Unreal, Unity, Godot, and so on.

This is a fun way for students to explore their interests in games in addition to understanding how serious games are emerging as an important learning tool.

Students are encourage to team up and build their own projects. They also have an option to contribute to our ongoing serious game called CyberSurvivor, an immersive survival crafter game that teaches the pillars of computer science through a narrative where a zombie apocalypse has struck the CSUMB world.

Broadcasting

SALC students work in the Otter Media Center learning how to DJ music, use equipment, run podcasts, and refine individual personalities for their own content.

The Twinz Show broadcasts every Thursday at 2PM via Live 365.
