Greeting and salutations, everyone. This is Simon, your president speaking here.
I'll first like to apologise for the sluggish start to the semester; some of it was us not really getting to work, some of it were events out of our control (otter showcase getting pushed back, the strike delaying some classes, not having a space set aside for the club). But, here we are! We've been getting a few questions about the club, so I wanted to send this out to clarify things.
Meetings
We are going to still have weekly meetings (i say knowing we didn't have one yesterday), but we're breaking them up into two types; guided listening sessions and jams.
- Jams are exactly what they sound like; we meet up and go to town for 2 hours. I highly recommend bringing in chord progressions and arrangements for us to work on! Please note; we also HIGHLY RECOMMEND you bring your own instruments. While we may have some on hand, we share them with the rest of the Music Department and they might not always be there. For the brass and woodwind players, sorry; ours live in the World Theater and we don't have permission to take them. No, you don't have to bring amps; we have several.
- The Guided Listening sessions are going to be a pseudo-lecture going over the history of an album/artist/genre. The presentor will have a slideshow giving some information about a topic, play a currated selection of music, and guide a discussion about it. I'm still looking for an appropriate place to hold them, but I should know in the coming weeks. And yes, I will be giving the first one.
Meetings will be on Monday nights; hours will be different for each meeting type, so be sure to check your email about where and when they will be running. The two will be alternating week to week; meaning 2 jams and 2 listening sessions a month (ideally speaking).
Another thing; the Events tab isn't going to have anything in it until around mid-March since it takes about 2 weeks for events to be approved by ICC. We still will have events, just be sure to look out for emails. I swear I'll be better about sending them in a timely fashion.
Radio Show
That's right; we have a radio show! Every Wednesday from 2-3, Janelle, Nathan and I will be on SONAR (Ottermedia's internt radio channel) to do essentially a live weekly Guided Listening. If you want to tune in, it's on channel 73 on Steeme. Go to OM's instagram for instruction on how to sign in. Should there be enough interest in this, we'll open it up to general membership so they can lead a weekly show. Email me if you're interested; we'll go from there.
A Performance?
We're still working on that; we have an opportunity coming up in Otterlands, Ottermedia's music festival, so should there be people wanting to perform, we'll be in touch with them. As far as an actual show, it's going to be a little more complicated than that. We have a space, but we don't know if we have the bodies for it. To show the officers you're serious about it, we'll be having a signin sheet at every meeting. If you attend 4 meetings, you'll qualify. And not in just show up, sign in and leave; we want to hear you play for us. The sheet will be on a table by the door starting with the jam session next week, so don't miss it!
We'll reach out to you once you've reached the threshold.
Odds and Ends
So, something to note about all the officers is that we're graduating after this semester. All of us. We're hoping music club doesn't die with us, so we're trying to lay the groundwork for the next generation of officers to come in a take over. We'll be keeping tabs on who is showing up and putting in the effort to keep our little club going, and hopefully they will lead it into the future. We won't be holding elections as there aren't enough regularly attending members; just put in the work and you'll be hand-picked by us to be in the next batch of officers.
Emails
Have I mentioned emails enough yet? Please please please please - check your emails for updates on the club. I'm trying to come up with a good day to send them out. I'm thinking Sundays, so we'll see how that goes. The odd ones like this will be put out whenever we feel the need to alert the club members about something, like opportunities or local events not related to us.
With that, I'll see you all next week. Please star this, too so you can always go back to it!
Until then, stay safe and don't click this link
-Simon
